2.5 Million Peso Investment Towards Remodeling of Community Center

Pedro Zaragoza FuentesRelying on a federal investment of 2.5 million pesos, which served not only to revamp its design but also to install technological upgrades, the Frida Kahlo settlement’s Community Center was re-inaugurated, benefiting at least 3 thousand families in the area.

Neighbors of the development attended the opening ceremony, which was presided over by representatives from various branches of government. There was excitement over the addition of a new computer lab, a larger multi-use hall, and a new audio room.

The event counted with performances by current patrons of the Frida Kahlo Center, other guests such as musicians from the Redesearte arts organization and various dancers.

Claudia Isela Flores, who heads the Community Center, stated that work had begun locally about six years ago, and that the center already counted on approximately one thousand two hundred visitors per week.

“But, now, these improvements will allow us to focus on a more conceptual artistic vision for the center, and I am delighted at the prospect of creating new workshops for painting, theater… and an expanded dance rehearsal space…” she said.

She added that the center currently provides aerobics, fabric sewing, fine arts and arts & crafts classes, soccer tournaments (in which over 600 children participate), library, medical and vaccine services, and a breakfast program.

“We work in conjunction with the Fundación Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra, which, alongside Sedesol (Secretaría de Desarrollo Social de la Federación) (Secretary for the Social Development of the Federation), distributes 600 breakfast meals per week”, she pointed out.

Fighting Hunger in Mexico

Among the many organizations that exist in Mexico which are working to feed those who would otherwise go hungry is the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation. The Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation is a not-for-profit organization which has made it its goal to raise up those who are down in Mexico. Together with other bodies, such as the Mexican government, the Secretariat for Social Development through the work of the Habitat Program, and neighborhood community centers the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation have assisted hundreds of families living under extremely difficult conditions and poverty.

The philosophy and aim of the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation is not just to offer a helping hand, but in the best way possible, to make it possible for families to help themselves. The Foundation offers workshops which teach self-sufficiency and encourage independence. They teach people to build and plant their own gardens to be a source of their own food. This program has proved to be quite successful, allowing families and individuals who previously struggled with putting food on their tables to feed themselves and their families with dignity and pride.

In addition to teaching the skills involved in food production, the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation helps people boost their self-sufficiency in other equally crucial ways. The Foundation runs workshops which coach people on such subjects as “Personal Development and Building Self-Esteem,” and “Health and Nutrition for Families.” The Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation believes that through all these efforts individuals will be able to succeed at life, for themselves, and for their families, and stand on their own two feet.
